Many teachers often ask themselves – “Why is physical fitness important?” Physical education has been an integral part of student learning since the inception of the classroom. However, they may not know what to actually do in the classroom for those few minutes in the gym or auditorium where it occurs. The majority of physical education class sizes in the United States are very small and teachers cannot afford to spend much time in class instructing and helping their students. The rest of their time is spent running the gym or doing group work.
Studies show that physical activity helps to reduce the chances of becoming obese, especially among minority children. It also helps to keep people physically fit. A good physical education program helps children learn about the importance of a healthy diet, regular exercise, weight management, and the prevention of diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, and cancer.
Children learn about their body, how to maintain their healthy bodies, how to grow and maintain healthy bodies, the risks of obesity, the benefits of physical activity, and how to get along with their peers. Social development objectives are also touched on during this curriculum. Why is physical education so important? To reach the goal of healthy physical development, a student must have the knowledge and skills to become physically active. These skills include balancing and maintaining good posture, controlling body movement, flexibility and strength, proper sitting, standing, walking, and getting out of bed.
A well-rounded physical education program also helps students to develop relationships within their peer groups. The goal of most schools is to create a supportive and non-judgmental school environment that encourages healthy relationships. A healthy social network helps students to grow as individuals who respect and protect their health and well-being at all times. This promotes academic performance and socialization.
A physically active lifestyle reduces the risk of becoming obese, a leading cause of childhood obesity. It also helps prevent chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, and certain cancers. Regular physical activity also helps to reduce the risk of lower respiratory tract illnesses and asthma. The results of a recent study in The American Journal of Sports Medicine show that participating in low-impact aerobic exercise improves blood pressure and increases cardiovascular health while reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. The results were particularly encouraging for African American and Hispanic Americans.
The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that physical activity has been shown to decrease the chances of children becoming overweight or becoming obese. It has also been shown to help prevent a number of childhood diseases such as osteoporosis, diabetes, and attention deficit disorder (ADD). The positive benefits of physical activity have also been proven in studies conducted by the American Heart Association and the National Institute of Diabetes. Physical activity has also been shown to improve sleep quality, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, lower the risk of cancer, improve brain function and memory, reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease, and increase happiness and positive moods in children. These are just some of the important aspects of physical fitness.
In many schools, P.E. is offered alongside traditional educational curriculum in order to encourage and support healthy lifestyles. However, not all schools have incorporated physical education into their curriculum. This can be at the local level where P.E. is often offered as an elective or part of a class program that other students are required to participate in.
The primary purpose of P.E. is to help children become more active and fit so they will have a better chance of staying active and fit throughout their lives. Children who participate in physical fitness activities are more likely to take part in sports and other extracurricular activities that they love. They are also less likely to develop health problems like obesity and high blood pressure. The importance of why is physical education important can be understood when people realize how much it can benefit students in the classroom and how much it can benefit them later in life.
