What is special education? It is a subject that encompasses a variety of subjects dealing with the educational needs of disabled or differently-abled pupils. Special education deals with children and adults suffering from particular learning problems. The most common learning issues are visual and hearing problems; cognitive problems; psychological difficulties such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia; and physiological issues such as physical handicap, limited motor skills, or other learning disability. Multiple Disabilities Children with multiple disabilities can face unique problems while receiving regular education. Students with multiple disabilities usually have trouble understanding the same materials or concepts. Sometimes they struggle to work within a structure and/or get involved in group projects. They need personalized programs that take their specific needs into consideration. Special education programs for students with multiple disabilities are designed keeping in mind their educational needs and characteristics.
Hearing and Handicapped Children Special education teachers also have a very important role when it comes to deaf-blindness. Deaf-blindness can have a significant impact on a child’s success in school because it affects their ability to learn and interact with others. Special education allows deaf-blindness specialists to integrate the educational programs into the child’s lifestyle so that he/she does not need to unlearn skills that they have already acquired. Emotional Distress A child with emotional disturbance has a very difficult time progressing. These children often do not interact well socially and are unable to function normally in most situations. They help educators recognize the various symptoms and signs of emotional disturbance and refer appropriately to a developmental specialist or a psychologist for treatment. Orthopedic Impairments Special education teachers play a significant role in the diagnosis and treatment of children with orthopedic impairments. These impairments must be addressed effectively in order to improve a child’s educational performance. Most orthopedic impairments related to knee, spine, and hip injuries are treatable. There are special programs for those children who experience learning and motor disabilities due to orthopedic disorders. Early diagnosis and orthopedic rehabilitation can significantly improve the educational performance of such children.
